Pack a Sack for Haiti As we celebrate Children’s Sabbath and Grandparents’ Day, on October 10th, join us in this multigenerational project where church members of all ages will be helping our neighbors in Haiti. Our goal is to make 100 school kits to send to the children in Haiti. Each sack will be handmade and filled by members of our congregation. Our hope is that we will be reminded of the needs of our neighbors in Haiti and will remember them in our prayers throughout this project and beyond. If you are interested in becoming involved in missions, please contact the Director of Missions for FUMC, Karen Stagg at 383-4777, or karen@firstmethodist.org.
Knitting Ministry Recipient of Award WAFB Street Beat Reporter Greg Meriwether recently launched an inspiring series called “Hand It On”. Here’s how it works: Each week, Greg will give someone $300. That person will then have to “Hand It On” by giving away the cash to someone who needs a little lift in life, or someone who’s done a great deed. Knitting The Threads of God’s Love is excited, honored and blessed to receive $300.00 from Greg Meriwether. The segment aired Monday, May 24 during the 10 o’clock news. The knitting ministry was chosen after a prayer shawl recipient wrote a wonderfully inspiring letter to WAFB  about how the knitting ministry has blessed him and his wife through the prayer shawls they received. The money is being used to purchase more yarn and supplies for the ministry.
Recent Mission Trip to El Mesias On May 21 a mission team consisting of Kathy and Clay Smiley, Fred Skelton, Ruth and Mike Owenby, and Brian and Darlene Guillot traveled to El Mesias UMC in Kenner, Louisiana for a work day. The team painted two rooms used for children's Sunday school classes. Brian, with help from an El Mesias church member, also removed rotten wood from underneath a sink in the bathroom and refloored this area. A delicious lunch of tortillas and "tres leches" cooked by Maribel and church members was enjoyed by all. First UMC is planning another mission to El Mesias in the spring of 2011. Dates for this mission will be published in future newsletters. If you are interested in becoming involved in missions, please contact the Director of Missions for FUMC, Karen Stagg at 383-4777, or karen@firstmethodist.org.
Second Sunday Mission Lunch On the second Sunday of every month we invite you to join us in the gym at FUMC for fellowship and our Sunday Mission Lunch. A group of FUMC volunteers will prepare and serve a delicious lunch that is sold after both worship services. The lunch is $6.00 and to-go plates are available. The funds raised are dedicated to various missions supported by FUMC. If you would like to learn more about missions at FUMC or volunteer to help cook/serve, please contact Karen Stagg, Director of Missions at 225-383-4777 or karen@firstmethodist.org.

Mission and Service

Faith without works is dead—this biblical principle is a challenge to every disciple to engage in intentional kingdom building work in today’s world. First United Methodist will offer counsel and suggestions as to how its members can put their faith into action as they share in work that advances the mission of Christ and the Church.

As we celebrate Children’s Sabbath and Grandparents’ Day, on October 10th, join us in this multigenerational project where church members of all ages will be helping our neighbors in Haiti.

Needs in Haiti: As with any catastrophe, the following recovery takes time, this is no different in Haiti. Long before the earthquake rocked the tropical nation, poverty and broken infrastructure plagued the land. The school kits that we are making provide tangible hope during times of crisis and may be these children’s only educational resources.

What We Are Doing: Our goal is to make 100 school kits to send to the children in Haiti. Each sack will be handmade and filled by members of our congregation.

What You Can Do To Help: We need volunteers to sew the sacks together and to gather the supplies to go inside the sacks.

Supplies needed to fill the sacks include:

1 pair of blunt scissors (rounded tip)
3 pads (or loose leaf) of 8 ½ x 11” ruled paper
1 12-inch ruler
1 hand held pencil sharpener
6 unsharpened pencils with erasers
1 eraser, 2 ½”
1 box of 24 crayons (only 24)
All items must be new please.
Approximate cost to fill one bag is $11
