Ministry of Spiritual Companionship
LIFE MENTORING
Life Mentoring provides a way of discovering God in the midst of day to day life as we companion one another as disciples. If you want to learn and grow, share the journey with a Christian friend, and become more intentional regarding faith development, contact Kay or John Hoppe at 225-769-1940, or Cherri Johnson, Director of Spiritual Formation at 225-383-4777, ext. 249, or cherri@firstmethodist.org.
Life Mentoring Testimony:
Chris Henderson writes: “Mentoring is usually described as a teacher or coach. However, it can be much more than that. Matthew 18:20 states, “for where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them”. When two souls feel “Jesus” connection in their lives there are no boundaries to the depth of a relationship – The two become like a sponge – absorbing all they can of God and His Word….to “Follow me” as Jesus states in Matthew 9:9”
Chris Cerniauskas writes of his experience:
“As I go through my life with its daily challenges of being an adult in today’s society – being a husband, a father, a Christian, a worker -- I need something to utilize as a spiritual sounding board to ensure I am headed in the right direction. This something needs to be rooted in Christian values with a person or people that could pass on life’s lessons, share a story, listen to me work through issues or discuss my beliefs.
Sometimes Church and Sunday School just don’t provide me the one-on-one forum I need to express how I feel, what I think, and demonstrate my desire to learn from other’s past experiences. FUMC’s Mentoring in Christ program has provided me that outlet.
On a regular basis, our small group comes together to discuss our lives as Christians. Though founded in a mentor-protégé format, all involved partake in the learning / teaching process, each person sharing their beliefs / experiences while the others listen. Through this group I have learned about myself and been able to fill a part of my spiritual life that felt empty. I would whole-heartedly recommend this program of fellowship to any Christian who wants to grow, learn, and teach as Christ has taught us to do.”

One may seek out a spiritual director for a variety of reasons including: understanding their personal relationship with God; exploring spiritual practices and gifts, discerning God’s will, making important decisions consistent with Christian faith and deepening prayer. Spiritual directors receive extensive training in faith formation and spiritual companionship, are accountable to their own spiritual director and a spiritual direction peer group. Meetings are confidential and private. For more information please contact Cherri Johnson, Director of Spiritual Formation at 225-383-4777, or cherri@firstmethodist.org.
