The Senior Adult Ministry at First UMC will host a bus tour visit and tour of the Greater Baton Rouge Zoo and Oakley House in St. Francisville on Wednesday, May 22nd. The group will be able to tour the Zoo on their own for the first hour and then have a Private Education Program, followed by a catered lunch. Following lunch, the group will board the bus for Oakley House for a guided tour of the house and grounds. We’ll meet Danny Heitman, popular columnist and editorial page editor for The Advocate. (The Advocate recently won the Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting). Mr. Heitman will speak to us about his book A Summer of Birds. His book details a relatively unknown chapter in the life of renowned naturalist painter, ornithologist and literary figure John James Audubon. Audubon’s stay at Oakley lasted only four months, but he painted 32 of his famous bird pictures there and developed a love for the beautiful West Feliciana Parish.
